Billions In Estimated Medicare Advantage Payments From Chart Reviews Raise Concerns
—
In December 2019, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General (OIG), released this report, Billions in Estimated Medicare Advantage Payments From Chart Reviews Raise. The OIG conducted this review due to concerns that Medicare Advantage organizations (MAOs) may use chart reviews to increase risk-adjusted payments inappropriately. The OIG found a number of potential issues about the extent to which chart reviews are leveraged inappropriately by MAOs and provides a number of recommendations for the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
